Unlike shaving and waxing, IPL laser hair removal is considered the treatment of choice for long-term reduction of unwanted hair. Laser and IPL hair removal relies on the absorption of light by the melanin contained in the hair shaft in preference to absorption by melanin in the skin. Think of a black t-shirt on a sunny day!
How does the treatment work?
The hairs must be pre-shaven before the treatment. The IPL is then passed over the area and the pigment in the hairs absorb the light and convert this to heat. The heat travels down the hair and disables or destroys the cells that make new ones.
Is it permanent?
In most cases, yes. Many people report they achieve permanent hair reduction after just a few treatments. However, some people may require touch-ups every few years to keep those hair bulbs from sprouting out new follicles.
How does it feel?
Treatment sensation varies from person to person, and area to area, but is often described as a flick of an elastic band, or spatter of hot oil. The best IPL devices today work so quickly though, you’ll barely have time to register the sensation.
How long does it take?
The treatment length varies depending on the size of the area. Something small, such as the upper lip will take around 5 minutes, something larger, i.e. full leg or full back, could be 60-90 minutes.
How many treatments are recommended?
Only hair that is actively growing is affected, therefore multiple treatments are needed. A typical average number of treatments is 8-12, though it does vary. Treatments are carried out every 4 to 6 weeks depending on the area being treated.
Am I suitable for treatment?
Most people are suitable for treatment, however there are some medical conditions that are contraindicated or need a doctor's letter. Best results are seen in people who have lighter skin and darker hairs. Dark hair is easier to treat as it has a high concentration of pigment, and fairer skin mean there is a bigger contrast between hair and skin colour, meaning energy can be safely increased to be more effective.
